Blaby Green Party is pleased to announce Tony Deakin as the Green Party candidate for the Mid-Leicestershire Constituency in this year’s General Election. Tony was born and raised in Leicester and has lived in the Mid-Leicestershire Constituency for the last 25 years with wife Joanne, bringing up their two daughters.

Tony left the city to train as a physiotherapist in Wakefield, Yorkshire, and returned following his qualification in 1992 to work first in Glenfield Hospital and then Leicester General Hospital. Both Tony and Joanne, also a physiotherapist, then gained great experience working in New Orleans before returning to Leicester in 1999 to raise a family. Tony has since worked as a Private Practitioner, establishing Leicester Forest East Physiotherapy Clinic in 2001 and moving into its own premises in 2015. The business has flourished and Tony and Joanne are now at the threshold of opening a second clinic.

Tony has been a member of the Green Party since 2019, being inspired to join by the success of the party in local council elections that year. He has continued as the Co-ordinator of Blaby Green Party ever since and in 2023 spearheaded a successful campaign that saw him elected as a District Councillor for Blaby. He has been active in this role, taking up a position on the Planning Committee and contributing fully to strategy development for the Council. Additionally, Tony has sought to contribute to community life in his home village of Kirby Muxloe by acting as a Trustee of the Library and Community Hub, helping to organise events such as a “Mid-Summer Picnic in the Park” and a tree-planting weekend.

Away from work and village life Tony is a longstanding season ticket holder, together with members of his family, at Leicester City. He and Joanne both enjoy cycling and are often seen on a summer Sunday travelling the country roads of northwest Leicestershire, or alternatively out walking with their dog, Toffee.

Being virtually a lifetime resident of Leicester has given Tony extensive knowledge and understanding of the city and county and its residents. He has become particularly concerned regarding the long-term lack of investment in the County and its people. He says, “Despite the best efforts of committed and hard-working local people, lack of investment has caused our health and social services to be decimated, with record waiting times to access much needed help and support.” He adds, “As the new Member of Parliament for Mid-Leicestershire I would dedicate my time to fighting for a fair deal from Government for the people of Leicestershire, something that hasn’t happened in decades!” Tony strongly believes that it is only the Green Party that puts community and climate change first. He states, “Fourteen years of Conservative austerity has given the country a loss of confidence, widespread poverty and a cost of living crisis. It is time for a new kind of politics that works to protect and enhance the environment and communities that we live in, giving people self-reliance and a stake in a better future, but doesn’t promote division, discrimination and inequality, or put the profits of the super-rich and the opportunities for the self-serving above the needs of the poorest in our society. Your vote for the Green Party is a demand for a better, fairer future, for the families of this generation and all those to come.”
